ENGINE DESIGNER MIKE COSTIN CURATES 5O YEAR COSWORTH DFV ANNIVERSARY DISPLAY AT RACE RETRO

2:47 AM
Race Retro, the international historic motorsport show, will bring together an incredible collection of Cosworth DFV powered race cars, to celebrate 50 years since one of the worlds most iconic engines made its debut on the track.

The collection, which includes the Williams FW08 driven by Keke Rosberg to win the 1982 World Drivers Championship, has been curated by Mike Costin, who along with Keith Duckworth gave his name to the powerplant.

Mike will appear at Race Retro and will be interviewed on the Motor Sport Live Stage. I am delighted to be involved in this display to mark the anniversary of the Cosworth DFV story, said Costin. I look forward to being reunited with some of the star cars of the past.

Event Director Daniel Nwaokolo said: The Cosworth DFV is synonymous with the greatest era of Formula 1 and to have the display curated by designer Mike Costin, one of the greatest engineers of our time, just makes it even more special.

Held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from 24-26 February 2017, Race Retros display will include stunning cars from the Donington Grand Prix Collection, all to be hosted in the dedicated Motor Sport Hall of Fame.

Christopher Tate, Managing Director of Donington Park, said: We are delighted to be partnering with Motor Sport Magazine to put on this fantastic display at Race Retro to kick off the 40th anniversary celebrations of the re-opening of Donington Park. Were looking forward to showing some of the most famous cars from our Grand Prix Collection and welcoming a large number of enthusiastic race fans ahead of what is certain to be a special year for Donington Park.

And we can announce one special feature if you can bring and show us your treasured ticket or programme* from our historic opening event in 1977 at Donington Park, we will exchange that, in advance, for free admission to one day of this years Donington Historic Festival, April 28/29/30.

As a statement of its intention as the new owner and to celebrate the events 15th anniversary, organisers Clarion Events will be staging a Super Show for 2017. The Cosworth DFV display is the first of many celebratory features to be hosted within the Motor Sport Hall of Fame, with other iconic motorsport names, cars, bikes and technological advancements to be recognised.

Race Retro will also welcome motorsport industry traders with over 85 specialists already committed to attending including Demon Tweeks, Classic World Racing, Millers Oils, and the Vintage Sports Car Club.

Tickets are now on sale for Race Retro, held from 24th to 26th February 2017 at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, with free parking for all visitors. For the latest updates and ticket information, visit www.raceretro.com.

WHEELER DEALER MIKE BREWER READIES FRENCH FANCY FOR LANCASTER INSURANCE CLASSIC MOTOR SHOW

1:37 AM
With a legion of fans across the world, TVs Wheeler Dealer Mike Brewer is used to rolling up his sleeves and bringing classic cars back to their best. However, for his latest project, which is to be revealed at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, hes taking a different approach.

I wanted to show people you can still buy a viable classic and, if you do your research, find a specialist to turn around a car says Mike.

The car in question is a 1972 Citroen SM a car from the height of Citroens most eccentric and turbulent period. Its a car that would send a lot of people running scared theyre very complex, but I wanted to show that if you do your research you can find the right people to turn a car around he adds.

The SM launched in 1970 and in 72, the year Mikes SM left the factory, it was voted Motor Trends Car of the Year. Citroen was in the midst of disastrous partnership with Maserati, a marriage that Mike says brought together two of the most eccentric, and most fragile manufacturers.

Despite that, the SM continued Citroens fine reputation of creating cars that were beautifully designed and intelligently engineered.

As TVs Wheeler Dealer, Mike gets plenty of emails from people asking him to take on a car as his latest project and thats how he found the SM. I got an email from a guy about the car it had been in the same family from new and had been used regularly, up until about 20 years ago, notes Mike.

One day it just stopped the family didnt really know the best way to sort it, so it was rolled into a garage and left.

With less than 40,000 miles on the clock and an impressive history file behind it, Mikes interest was piqued and he soon agreed a deal.

Mike then turned to the internet to look for the right specialist to bring the Citroen back to life. I looked online, I read reviews and I asked for recommendations. Its about doing your research says Brewer.

Mikes research led him to Paragon MoT and Service Centre in Northampton and their near neighbours Cosmetic Autocare. I didnt know either of the companies, but I did my research I wanted to show that anyone could do it, not just a Wheeler Dealer!

While Paragon have been charged with the mechanics, Cosmetic Autocare have been looking after the body. Its getting a full respray in the original Vert Agenta green so will look as good as it did 40 years ago.

When it comes to restoration projects its easy to let the costs spiral, but again, Mike is keen to keep things grounded. The budgets not endless I wanted this to be a realistic project. I reckon by the time Im done the car would have cost me somewhere around 10-12,000 and the result will be a car that Ill use and enjoy and one thatll be worth considerably more than that on the open market.

Mikes plan is to have the car ready for this years Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show at Birminghams NEC from the 11th to 13th November. We want to have it on the stage at the show, so weve only got a few weeks to get it finished.

As well as showing the car, Mike is running a very special competition via his website www.mikebrewer.tv, offering two tickets to this years show and a lucky punter the chance to join Mike for a test drive in the SM, hitting the mean streets of Birmingham, straight from the show.

Its going to be great Im saying to whoever wins to bring their phone, their camera, whatever, because the test drive will be brilliant itll be the first time Ive taken the car out on the road, and well, I wont shut up!

LONDON MOTOR WEEK AND 'A DARRACQ CALLED GENEVIEVE' BOOK LAUNCH

2:59 AM
Veteran cars planning to tackle the annual journey from Hyde Park to Brighton this November will need to be in more than just top mechanical condition they will need to look the part, too.

On the day before the Bonhams Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox leaves Londons Hyde Park (thats Saturday 5th November with the Run itself starting at first light on Sunday, 6th November) more than 100 veteran cars will take part in a Concours dElegance. The glittering showcase is a major highlight of the free-to-view Regent Street Motor Show, an annual event staged in one of the world's most prestigious shopping and lifestyle destinations situated right at the heart of the nations capital city.

Exhibiting in front of a panel of expert judges, including TV motoring pundit Edd China, the veterans are all more than 112 years old, with the youngest built in 1904 and the oldest in 1898. While most are petrol-powered, the Concours entry also includes an American-built Cleveland electric car from 1900.

They will be competing for a number of awards including the Concours dEquipe for the best turned-out team in period costume and the overall Concours dElegance.

However, not every car has to be polished to within an inch of their lives, as one of the most sought after gongs will be awarded to the best original or unrestored car.

One special prize involves members of the public voting for their favourite veteran car in the popular Spectators Choice Award, sponsored by Renault. The French company is one of the backers of the Veteran Car Run and an enthusiastic Run entrant with an open four-seater built in 1900 from its own heritage collection taking part in this years event. One lucky voter will also be in with a chance of winning an incredible prize and voting is already open just follow the links at www.regentstreetmotorshow.com. A name will be chosen at random to win 2,000 to spend on Regent Street; dinner at the Brasserie Zedel; and an overnight stay at the nearby Cavendish Hotel.

Among the cars entered are last years winners, back to defend their titles. A 1903 Pierce will be contesting the Concours dEquipe award; a 1903 Mors will be aiming to wow the spectators again, while no fluffy duster has been anywhere near an unrestored 1903 Oldsmobile in the past year.

Last years overall winner, a 1904 De Dion Bouton tourer, will also be back hoping to collect top honours again, before its annual 60 mile trip from capital to coast.

First held in 2005, the Regent Street Motor Show a Royal Automobile Club event has gone from strength to strength. Last year, the event welcomed a record 450,000 visitors and even more are expected this year.

Regent Street is closed to through traffic during the day and as well as the veterans, the latest generation of low and zero-emission cars (with short test drives on offer) plus classic cars and bikes, supercars and historic competition machinery will be on display.

Theres entertainment from the Steve Colley Stunt Bike display team, the Top Gear Mercedes F1 simulator and street theatre performances from the West End Kids. And, of course, theres plenty of opportunity to get a little early Christmas shopping done, too.

Visitors can find out more as well as vote in the Spectators Choice award by downloading the Regent Street app (available on both iOS and Android) which also allows visitors to explore Londons most iconic shopping and dinning destination.

 Veloce Book Launch News

Veloce Publishing will launch A Darracq Called Genevieve - Veteran Motoring's Most Famous Car at Bonham's Veteran Car Auction on November 4th between 5pm and 7pm. Author, Rodney Laredo, will be on hand to sign copies. We'll be next to Genevieve for the Regent Street Motor Show on the 5th and, again, Rodney Laredo will be on hand to sign copies of his new book.
Veloce is grateful to Bonhams for hosting the launch and to the Louwman Museum, The Hague, Netherlands for the presence of Genevieve at the event, when Genevieve is normally on display.

The life and times of the worlds most famous veteran car!

Genevieve is the first definitive, documented, ownership history and cinematic record of the 1904 French Darracq motorcar. This car was propelled to international fame as Genevieve, in the record breaking 1953 film that centred around the annual London to Brighton run for veteran cars pre-1905.

A Darracq called Genevieve is the story of the car that starred in the Bafta award-winning Genevieve, Best British Film of the coronation year 1953 with an Oscar nominated music score by harmonica player Larry Adler. The film became the catalyst for unprecedented interest in veteran motoring worldwide.
Genevieves participation in the annual London to Brighton run for veteran cars, alongside her rival, a throaty, bright yellow Dutch Spyker, has become a legendary tale. But what of this 1904 French Darracqs life before and after its film career?
Rodney Laredos in-depth biography of Genevieve is the first of its kind. It charts both the public and private life of this famous identity within the old car industry.
For more than forty years the author has collected an extensive pictorial and documented archive of material, through his own personal association with Genevieve and her respective owners and restorers in England, New Zealand, Australia, and Holland. Much of the material is new, and made available here for the first time.
Intriguing recollections from those who starred in the film Genevieve, who were involved in its production, and who became friends of the author over a long period are likewise included.

A Darracq called Genevieve is available now! Click HERE for more information about the book!

VELOCE TO SUPPORT GURSTON DOWN FF FEST

2:23 AM
We are delighted to announce that Veloce Publishing is to support the inaugural Formula Ford Fest at the award-winning Wiltshire venue. The Veloce FF Fest, catering for drivers entering 1600cc Kent engine Formula Fords, will run within the Midland & Gurston Down Hillclimb Championship meeting over the weekend of July 23rd/24th.

Veloce already sponsors the Pre-1994 Kent engine Formula Ford class in the Gurston Down Hillclimb Championship, and fittingly the class championship was won in 2015 by Sturminster Newton-based Veloce author Simon McBeath in his 1.6 Swift SC92F. With some cajoling from Simon the organising club at Gurston Down, the South Western Centre of the British Automobile Racing Club, agreed to run the FF Fest, the idea being to gather together as many of these very closely matched, iconic single seater racing cars as possible for what is sure to be an incredibly tight competition on the sinuous but fast and demanding 1057 yard (967 metre) course. The Formula Ford class record at Gurston Down currently stands at 36.39 seconds, but that mark could come under attack in the extra heat of Veloce FF Fest competition!

As well as Pre-1994 cars, the Veloce FF Fest will also cater for classic Pre-1982 cars as well as cars built from 1994 onwards so it is hoped to attract entries not only from current hillclimbers but circuit racers too from around the region. The extra support from Veloce Publishing is sure to increase the profile of the event.

Further information on the venue can be found at gurstondown.org and technical regulations for the FF class and the FF Fest can be found under Competitor Information.

FIRST FF FEST AT GURSTON DOWN HILLCLIMB!

7:19 AM

Gurston Down has announced that it will host the inaugural Hillclimb Formula Ford Fest at its July 23rd/24th Midland/Gurston Down Hillclimb Championship event. The Hillclimb FF Fest, will be for Kent-engined 1600cc cars and, subject to the requisite entry numbers, there will be three classes: pre-1982 Classic FF; pre-94 FF; and 94 onwards FF. The first two classes fall within Gurston Downs existing pre-94 FF class, so drivers in those classes will be eligible for Gurston Championship points as long as they register for the championship before the due date, May 15th.

The idea of a hillclimb FF Fest came from Van Diemen RF91 driver Charlie Reilly in 2015 and, as Gurston already has an FF class, supported by Veloce Publishing Ltd, the fit seemed perfect! With the cars being matched on power and weight, the competition is bound to be extremely close on Gurstons 1057 yard (967 metre) course! Andrew Hensons three year old class record may also come under threat

The technical regulations have been posted on the Drivers Information page of the Gurston Down Hillclimb web site and can be found by clicking on the link to Supplementary Regs. In essence the regulations for Gurstons FF classes are identical to circuit racing Kent FF 1600 regs with the sole exception that a timing strut to S.10.9 must be fitted to actuate the timing equipment.

Entries for the July 23/24 event are open now and close on June 24th. Numbers may have to be limited, so get those entries in early! As always the acceptance of entries is entirely at the discretion of the competition secretary!

Veloce author, Simon McBeath won the FF class championship at Gurston Down last season in what was his comeback season after a 12 year layoff from competition.

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS OF ALPINE AT GOODWOOD FOS 2015

2:41 AM
The new Alpine Celebration Goodwood show car is the glamorous centrepiece of this famous sporting brands display at the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Alpine will celebrate 60 years of pedal-to-the-metal race and road cars at Goodwood this year, featuring demonstrations and displays not only of the exciting new Alpine Celebration Goodwood, but of many famous cars from its past.
Most of these cars will run up the hill on Friday in a single celebratory batch, while Lord March will drive the Alpine Celebration Goodwood up the hill in the first run to open this years Festival of Speed.

Alpine Celebration Goodwood

A compact sports car inspired by Alpines motorsport heritage, the Alpine Celebration Goodwood is a two-seater coup with sleek, flowing lines.  Its colour scheme has been specially created for the Goodwood Festival of Speed to commemorate 60 years of heritage, celebrated by a blazon on the side and rear, and will be seen for the first time at the opening of this years Festival.  The Goodwood moniker in the show cars name recognises the event, as well as this new livery, and distinguishes it from the Alpine Celebration Le Mans show car that appeared at the 24 hour race earlier this month.
The deep blue colour scheme is the same blue that adorns the Alpine prototypes that made a triumphant return to endurance racing in 2013. It is a livery referencing the Alpine models that played such a pivotal role in the brands original Le Mans adventure when, from 1963 to 1969, the M63, M64, M65, A210, A220 and even the A110 so valiantly upheld French honour in La Sarthe.
The Alpine Celebration Goodwood faithfully replicates the timeless style of Alpines of old whilst adding a modern twist. Its low profile, sloping, creased bonnet, sculpted sides, distinctive rear window and other design details are all clear echoes of models like the A110 that have featured so prominently in Alpines glorious history.
With no need for gimmickry to stand out from the crowd, the beauty of the Alpine Celebration Goodwood resides in its simplicity. Mindful of remaining elegant whilst at the same time responding to the need for frugality and efficiency, the Alpine Celebration Goodwood show car reveals much about the brands heritage. If it retains a familiar style and set of values, it integrates them in a thoroughly modern manner. Carbon detailing is used to highlight the high-tech features of the cars body, from its spoiler to the side sills, diffuser, rear air intakes and mirrors.
The positioning of the masked double headlamps and the central round lights barred by a white cross will remind fans of the adhesive strips that used to be found on the headlights of Alpines rally cars. It was formerly a means of holding the lenses together should they be broken.
The apparently floating spoiler framing the Alpines bold nose strength, whilst the visual impression of poise and efficiency is enhanced by the straight, sharp lines of the side sills. The mirrors, meanwhile, incorporate a thin mirror that seems to be suspended free of its housing to heighten the dynamic, lightweight and aerodynamically efficient feel.  The famous Alpine arrowed A is visible on the air intake grille, sides, front wings and roof.
The design of the wheels recalls a style that was popular on the A110 and A310 models during the 1970s. They reveal the prominent brake discs and orange brake callipers. In the middle is a one-piece cast aluminium hub another element that contributes to the overall styling.
The athletic rear integrates air intakes built into the rear quarter panels to contribute to engine cooling. The engine cover which can be spied through the louvered motifs of the rear window reveals the mid-rear positioning of the power plant.
Above the wheel arches, scoops guide airflow in a manner that is unmistakeably Alpine. The rear of the vehicle is characterised by an impressive diffuser that incorporates a central rear light, flanked by two brushed stainless steel exhaust tailpipes. The approach throughout is very clearly to highlight rather than conceal the cars structural elements. The result suggests low weight, agility and rewarding performance.
That said, the true significance of the Alpine Celebration Goodwood show car is to be found in its design all flowing, sensual curves which single-handedly symbolises the very essence of driving pleasure la franaise.

Alpine A106

Rdls first production car, the A106 was based on the popular 4CV saloon, highly tuned versions of which he had raced very successfully. Rdl reckoned that with a special lightweight body the 4CV would be swifter still. In fact, he had already commissioned talented Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti to design aluminium coachwork for a lighter 4CV, this pretty one-off coupe built by coachbuilders Allemano.  The 4CV Spcial Sport turned out to be a major giant-killer in the 1953 Dieppe rally.
At much the same Rdl had become interested in glassfibre technology, had grown keener to become a car manufacturer in his own right and had heard about a wealthy American industrialist by the name of Zark W. Reed. Reed wanted to build plastic-bodied sportscar to sell in the US against MG and Triumph. The two met, and devised a plan for Reeds Plasticar company to build a grp-bodied version of the Michelotti car called the Marquis. The project ultimately came to nothing, but provided inspiration for the A106, as did a second 4CV rebody Rdl had ordered from Italian coachbuilder Allemano.
In 1955 Rdl presented three A 106s in red, white and blue to Renault CEO Pierre Dreyfus, their glassfibre bodywork manufactured by Chappe et Gasselin. The A106 was primarily intended as a racing car and offered with various power outputs, suspension set-ups, weight reductions and a (pricey) five-speed gearbox option. But demand for road-going versions saw it appearing at the 1957 Paris motor show, alongside a new Michelotti-designed cabriolet. Larger Renault Dauphine engines and even a spaceframe chassis were eventually offered, 251 A106s produced between 1955-59 at the companys Dieppe factory.

Alpine A108

The A108 was a coupe version of Michelottis restyled A 106 cabriolet, based on the 4CVs Dauphine successor. It appeared with the A106 at the 57 Paris show powered by a 37bhp Gordini version of the Dauphines four-cylinder 845cc engine. Like its predecessor the A108 was glassfibre-bodied on a pressed steel platform. But Rdl developed a more advanced version called the GT4, which used a steel backbone chassis, cradles at either end carrying the suspension, powertrain and steering gear. It rode on a 7cm longer wheelbase and appeared in 1963, only a year after the Lotus Elan was launched using the same arrangement.
Although less than 100 GT4s were built, its structural composition was the basis for the legendary A110, whose styling was a highly successful evolution of the A 108s look. Rdls dream of overseas production was also realized with the A108, the car built under licence in Brazil by Willys-Overland to become the countrys first sports car. Renamed the Willys Interlagos, it was produced in Sao Paolo and enjoyed plenty of competition success. An impressive 822 were built from 1960 to 1965 more than the 236 Alpine A108s built in Dieppe between 1960-62.

Alpine A110

The A110 Berlinette was an evolution of the A108, but a very significant one. It harnessed hardware from the Renault R8 rather than its Dauphine predecessor, and ran with engines that regularly became more powerful. Like the Alpine GT4, it was built around a backbone chassis to which its mechanicals were bolted, its exceptionally low body made from lightweight glassfibre. It was launched with a 1108cc engine which grew to 1255cc, then 1565cc, 1605cc and finally 1647cc for the Berlinetta SX. Aesthetically it changed relatively little over the years, not least because it was already very attractive. But there were many minor changes, among them a front grille with four headlights, widened wings, a front-mounted radiator, a removable rear skirt revised wheel designs and more.
Unusually for a relatively low volume car, the A110 was also produced under licence in Spain and Mexico. In total some 7,500 Berlinettes were produced between 1961 and 1965, the car shining in every competitive arena it entered. But its most famous exploits were on rally stages of the early 70s, Alpine winning the 1973 World Rally Championship with the car as well as many other victories.
The Alpine A110 Berlinette was the car that cemented Alpines reputation, and turned it international, besides giving dozens of drivers, professional and amateur, the taste of victory.

Alpine M65

A purpose-built sports prototype, the M65 was developed during a fertile design era for endurance racing cars triggered by the so called Index of Performance. This ingenious handicap system promoted all kinds of experimentation with mechanical layout, engine size and aerodynamics, cars scoring for efficiency as well as speed, Alpine winning it in 1964 with the M64.
The befinned M65 was powered by a Gordini-tuned 1300 engine that started life as the 1100 unit used by the Renault 8 Gordini. Its 130bhp was impressive for the engines size, and coupled with the M65s modest 669kg and fish-like slipperiness, allowed the Alpine to run at over 160mph on the Mulsanne straight.
In 1965 it won the 1300cc class at the Reims 12 Hours, topping that with a startling win in the Nrburgring 500km race, pair of M65s appearing at Le Mans in the same year, although Mauro Bianchi and Henri Grandsire would retire on lap 32.
Alpine A110 1800 Groupe 4
A competition version of the A110, this Groupe 4 car is powered by the largest engine used by the model. By this point the A110 was beginning to be beaten in rallies, but only after a long period of success that included a World Rally Championship win in 1973.

Alpine A442 B

This is the model that won Alpine outright victory in the 1978 Le Mans 24 Hours, with Jean-Pierre Jaussaud and Didier Pironi. Its success was the culmination of five years of work, the A 442B evolving from the first normally-aspirated A 440, the A 441 and then the turbocharged 442. There were many wins in Sport world championship events on the way, but plenty of heartache before Alpines ultimate goal was scored.
The A 442B was powered by a 2.1 litre turbocharged V6, hit a staggering 223mph on the Mulsanne straight and set what was then the fastest ever lap time recorded by an Alpine at La Sarthe. On the day of its victory Renault President and CEO Bernard Hanon, who had set Alpines Le Mans goal, announced that the team would withdraw from endurance racing to contest Formula One.
Each day, Ren Arnoux will pilot the A442b up the Goodwood hill climb.  Rens motor racing career spans 12 Formula One seasons (1978 to 1989), competing in 165 World Championship Grand Prix, winning seven of them, achieving 22 podium finishes and scoring 181 career points.

Signatech-Alpine  A450b

Fresh from its battles at this years Le Mans 24 Hour race, the Alpine 450b has been racing in this years World Endurance Championship, which is a step up from the European Le Mans (ELMS) championship that the Signatech-Alpine team has won for the past two years.
With these two successful seasons under its belt, Alpine has decided to turn up its programme a notch in 2015, the Alpine A450b appearing at all eight rounds of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).
The world championship represents a whole new challenge, says Alpines CEO, Bernard Ollivier. The context will be very different because our aim will be to make a name for ourselves in the LM P2 class. It will be a chance for us not only to keep learning but also to showcase our ability in parts of the world that are important for our brand. This programme will benefit Alpines image across the globe.
As a tribute to the Alpines which raced at Le Mans in the 1970s, the 'LM P2' prototype by Signatech-Alpine has been christened 'Alpine A450'.??Although Alpine is looking very much towards the future, it has not forgotten its extraordinary heritage. The Alpine A450 name raced at and in the case of the A442B won at Le Mans in the 1970s.
The 450b is driven in the WEC by Paul-Loup Chatain, Nelson Panciatici and Vincent Capillaire.
