VIDEO: PORSCHE THE RACING 914S (TRAILER)

5:54 AM
The remarkable little car that turned into a big hearted racer.

Coming soon! Porsche the racing 914s by Roy Smith. There are still those who see the Porsche 914 model as a funny little car, compared to the immortal 911. Granted, in its day, professional rally drivers were not keen on the 914: they were nervous driving it at the limit. Yet the records show that 914s were driven to at least 41 class wins, and at least 71 positions on the other two steps of the podium in Regional, National, and International Rallies.

Racing on the circuits of Europe, 914s came home first in their class, and even took overall victory many times. In the USA, in IMSA GTU championship, in nationals, and internationals, it was the same story and thats not counting the multitude of SCCA regional races. The 914 first raced in 1970 the last? Who knows: even now theyre still used in the USAs SCCA GT classes.
'Porsche the Racing 914s' is a study in pictures, statistics, factory information, and interviews, that will show the Porsche 914 in a whole new light. This richly illustrated book is released as a limited edition of only 1500 copies - a must have for all Porsche 914 and racing enthusiasts. More info.

BACK TO THE FUTURE!

1:32 AM
Veloce book is used to help Porsche GB restore a very rare, race car.

The 924 GTP race car driven in 1980 Le Mans 24 Hours by Tony Dron and Andy Rouse lives again, thanks to diligent work by Porsche GB Porsche Classic partners, using Veloce author Roy Smiths book The Porsche 924 Carrera evolution to excellence.

It all started just a few months ago in December, the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart allowed one of its prized original condition race cars to come to the UK in a bold plan to restore it to its original 1980s condition. The idea and dream of the personnel at Porsche GB in Reading, the back to the future project saw the 1980 Porsche Le Mans racer reunited with its original British driver line-up at the Silverstone performance centre, prior to beginning restoration by Porsche Classic Centre Partners, some thirty-five years since it last turned a wheel in anger.

The Porsche 924 Carrera GTP Le Mans raced at the iconic French 24 Hours endurance motor sport event in 1980 as part of an innovative three-car international team. Car #2 was the British entry, #3 the American and #4 the German. Each car featured distinctive liveries based on the national flags. Drivers Tony Dron and Andy Rouse, finished the 24 Hours in 12th place.

At a special event on 27th June Tony Dron, along with Derek Bell MBE who had driven the American decaled sister car, and Jurgen Barth who drove the German decaled third sister car, were reunited with, in Drons case, his car for the first time since that race 36 years ago.

Invited guests were to see a superb 100% accurate restoration, correct in every detail. This unique and spectacular car, restored by the skilled technicians at Porsche Classic Partner Centres, deserves huge praise. Four Porsche Classic Partner Centres in the Porsche Cars GB sales network were involved, located in Glasgow, Hatfield, Leeds and Swindon. A thorough investigation of the historic race car specification and finish has resulted in a superb, historically sympathetic - race-ready condition car.

Porsche Centre Glasgow worked on the suspension, brakes and wheels; Porsche Centre Hatfield, the gearbox and drivetrain; Porsche Centre Leeds had the responsibility for the electrics and radiator plumbing; Porsche Centre Swindon found and rebuilt the cars original engine. Road and Race Restorations in Manchester, a Porsche Recommended Body Repairer, completed the project by restoring the bodywork and interior trim. Porsche Classic, the factory department were able to supply many original parts. Each of the Porsche centre teams made extensive use of The Porsche 924 Carrera evolution to excellence book, to verify, decal placement, component placement and even to copy the style of welds by studying photographs included in Roy Smiths masterwork.

Celebrating the the 40th anniversary of the launch of the 924 in 1976, this historic 924 Carrera GTP Le Mans will be demonstrated at events such as Le Mans Classic, the Oldtimer Grand Prix, Silverstone Classic and the Lancaster Insurance NEC Classic Motor Show and will also be proudly displayed in the showrooms of the Porsche Centres responsible for bringing this part of Porsche motorsport history back to life once more.

The 924 GTPs engine a 1,984 cc, turbocharged in-line four-cylinder was fired up and Tony Dron who made an inaugural lap of the Porsche centre customer test circuit.

Author Roy Smith is an award-winning member of the Guild of Motoring writers. The Porsche 924 Carrera - evolution to excellence is still available to buy, while Roys next masterpiece PORSCHE the racing 914s is coming in September 2016.

924 GT RACE CAR DRIVEN IN 1980 LE MANS 24 HOURS BY TONY DRON AND ANDY ROUSE

3:35 AM
Back to the future: 1980 Porsche Le Mans racer reunited with British driver line-up at Silverstone prior to beginning restoration by Porsche Classic Centre Partners.

Thirty-five years since it last turned a wheel in anger, a significant Porsche race car has arrived in the UK in the first stage of a journey that will see it restored prior to returning once again to the circuit.

The Porsche 924 Carrera GT Le Mans raced at the iconic French 24 Hours endurance motor sport event in 1980 as part of an innovative three-car, international team. Car #2 was the British entry, #3 the American and #4 was the German car. Each car featured distinctive liveries based on the national flags, and the British car is arguably the only Porsche factory race to have competed with such a prominent red, white and blue motif.

The driving force in 1980 comprised Tony Dron and Andy Rouse, and they finished the 24 Hours in 12th place. At a special event at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone, the two British racers were reunited with their car for the first time since the race.

The front-engined, rear-wheel drive 924 coupe has been in the storage archives of the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart since its retirement. Now, Porsche Cars GB has been entrusted with the restoration of the famous British car #2 in a unique initiative that will see the skilled technicians at Porsche Classic Partner Centres undertake key aspects of the work.

There are four Porsche Classic Partner Centres in the Porsche Cars GB sales network, located in Glasgow, Hatfield, Leeds and Swindon. A thorough inspection of the historic race car has resulted in a comprehensive list of work that will be required to bring it back to a representative - yet historically sympathetic - race-ready condition. Porsche Centre Glasgow will work on the suspension, brakes and wheels; Porsche Centre Hatfield will take on the gearbox and drivetrain; Porsche Centre Leeds will have the responsibility for the electrics and radiator plumbing; and Porsche Centre Swindon will breathe new life into the engine. Road and Race Restorations in Manchester, a Porsche Recommended Body Repairer, will complete the project by restoring the bodywork and interior trim.

This project supports the 40th anniversary of the launch of the 924 in 1976, the first model in the so-called transaxle series of Porsche cars, with their front engines and gearboxes located in combination with the rear-driven axle. Once completed, it is intended the historic 924 Carrera GT Le Mans will be demonstrated at events such as Goodwood Festival of Speed, Silverstone Classic and Classics at the Castle and also proudly displayed in the showrooms of the Porsche Centres responsible bringing this part of Porsche motorsport history back to life once more.

JANIS JOPLIN'S ICONIC PORSCHE 356C CABRIOLET SET FOR AUCTION

7:41 AM

She may have famously sung Oh Lord, wont you buy me a Mercedes-Benz, but legendary singer Janis Joplin personally drove an unmistakably wild 1965 Porsche 365C 1600 Cabriolet. This December, Joplins iconic Porsche will be offered as a star attraction at RM Sothebys exclusive Driven by Disruption sale in New York City just in time for the holidays!

Janis Joplins 356C is without question one of the most important Porsches of all time, says Ian Kelleher, Managing Director of RM Sothebys West Coast Division. Its a fantastic automobile that transcends art, pop culture and social movements, and is as groundbreaking and stunning as the renowned singer was herself.

Joplin purchased the Porsche in September 1968 and decided that the original Pearl White finish was slightly too conservative for the Queen of Rock and Roll. She engaged Dave Richards, a friend and roadie with her band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, to customize the car with a kaleidoscopic mural. Described by Richards to represent The History of the Universe, the dramatic artwork included such graphics as butterflies and jellyfish, as well as a portrait of Joplin with members of the band. The finished product was as colorful as the singers personality and certainly representative of the era - a one-of-a-kind flamboyant symbol of San Franciscos psychedelic rock age. The car quickly became identified with Joplin, who was frequently seen driving it in period.

As Janiss sister and biographer, Laura Joplin recalls, Janis drove the car everywhere, all around San Francisco and down to Los Angeles when she was recording there. Wherever Janis went in the car, her fans recognized it. When she parked it and returned, there was always at least one fan note under the wipers.

Following Joplins untimely death in 1970, the Porsche has remained in her familys ownership, and was enjoyed by her manager, Albert Grossman, who drove it for several years, lending it to visiting family and friends. By the early 1990s, the car was treated to a meticulous restoration, preserving the integrity of the Porsche and presenting the car precisely as it was customized in period.

The Janis Joplin Porsche went on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland in 1995, where it remained a permanent and popular display up until this week. Offered for sale by the Joplin Family, it is expected to bring in excess of $400,000 when it crosses RM Sothebys New York podium in December.

Michael Joplin comments, Besides Janis's music and legacy, her Porsche is the most visual and important piece of memorabilia that exists. Like most people and their car of choice, her Porsche is a direct link to Janis. She drove it everywhere - and with everyone that was anyone in the San Francisco music scene - with the top down and her feathers flying. Her music, life and car are a part of rock and roll history.

Kelleher adds, As a titan of the creative movement of the late 1960s, Janis Joplin remains one of the music industrys brightest stars. It is an honor to be working with her family in the sale of this magnificent Porsche and even more so to have the opportunity to showcase such an important womans ownership of a classic car.

The Joplin Porsche will be joined at RM Sothebys December 10 sale by a carefully curated selection of some 30 creatively-styled and pioneering motor cars, and select automotive-themed artwork. The second iteration of the companys Art of the Automobile event, the December auction has been entitled Driven by Disruption. Much like the Porsches groundbreaking artwork, each of the cars in the auction showcases the extremes of motoring history and the molds that were broken by engineers and designers in pushing the automotive envelope. Previously slated for November, the new December date was strategically chosen to coincide with one of the most spectacular times of the year in New York City.

Whether it be a stunningly beautiful coachbuilt automobile, a wild, untraditional design, or a marvel of high performance engineering, the auction will present cars that break with the conventional morals of car design and production. We are delighted to showcase this exhibit during a time in New York that is truly magical, states Kelleher.

The new sale date is perfectly suited to the tastes and interests of RMs collector car clients, providing opportunity for them to not only spend a few days in New York during the electric holiday season, but to also enjoy other events taking place during the same period, including Sothebys Important Watches and Magnificent Jewels sales. As a prelude to the Driven by Disruption sale, an exclusive six-day exhibition will open over the weekend of December 5 in Sothebys 10th floor galleries.

ROY SMITH SIGNS HIS NEW BOOK ON THE PORSCHE 924 CARRERA HELPING TO REVIVE A LARGELY FORGOTTEN SUPERCAR

8:02 AM
Award winning motoring writer and member of the Guild of Motoring Writers, Roy Smith has personally signed a limited quantity of copies of his brand new book The Porsche 924 Carrera evolution to excellence at Veloce Publishings headquarters in Poundbury, Dorset this week.

The end result of several years of Roys own original research and world travels to interview those involved with the 924 Carrera, this brand new book was created with the full support of Porsche AG's archive centre in Stuttgart. A limited edition large square-format hardback, the book contains 408 images, many never published before, full racing statistics, and first hand interviews from those central to the 924 Carreras development & history, including input from Derek Bell MBE, Jrgen Barth, Norbert Singer, Tony Dron & Walter Rhrl.

Until now largely overlooked by history, the 924 Carrera was widely reported at the time as being one of the greatest of the Porsche specials and a true supercar, but has since been overshadowed by other models.

Here, for the first time, is the definitive story of the Porsche 924 Carrera. Roys work covers the 406 Homologation models, built to qualify for Le Mans, and the 59 very special competition models, as well as the 17 GTR racing models. With race details covering Europe and the USA, from the Sports Car Club of America production D racers, to the GTO and Trans Am class 924 GTRs of the mid-80s, this is the first time that the full history of this rare supercar has been told.

Veloce has published an exclusive video interview with Roy Smith and Derek Bell on YouTube.

Personally signed copies of the book are only available direct from Veloce Publishing, on a first-come first-serve basis, by requesting at checkout here.
